First ever Sherry Mixology Challenge Seeks to Discover Singular Sherry Cocktails
Sherry is taking center stage thanks to a unique project organized by the Regulatory Council. The first ever Sherry Mixology Challenge has begun and mixologists (and everyone else) are invited to participate for the chance to win cash prizes: $3,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $500 for third place. The semifinalist will receive a gift card to VinePair.
To enter the competition, all you have to do is come up with a completely unique cocktail using sherry from any producer of a DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry product. Pick your sherry style, e.g. Manzanilla, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, Oloroso, Fino, Cream, Moscatel, Pedro Ximénez, etc. and submit the name of the wine and winery in Jerez where the sherry is produced. Include all of the recipe ingredients, but you must use at least three and at most six, and one ingredient must be 0.5 oz of sherry. Also, you’re allowed to use homemade syrups and bitters. Include information about garnishes, the glass to be used, the preparation instructions, and include a photo of your drink and explain why your cocktail is the best. Lastly, feature a photo of your sherry cocktail on your Instagram feed.
You can submit your application until October 16th and all cocktails will be evaluated according to their creativity, innovative use of sherry and balance of flavor. Plenty of top mixologists at bars around the world have created clever cocktails using sherry, including the Bees Knees, which contains Oloroso, gin and beer; and the Bamboo Flip, made with Fino, vermouth, Angostura and orange bitters, an egg, and simple syrup.
