The winners have been announced for the 14th edition of the National Pinchos and Tapas Competition.
Held in Valladolid on November 5th and 6th, this major culinary event was held at the Millennium Dome and brought together 45 chefs, chosen from over 500 applicants.
The winners were Luis Antonio and Javier Carcas Armengol, the brothers behind the restaurant Casa Pedro, who created a spectacular creation called “La mar de pincho,” which was inspired by products from the sea. It consisted of a false oyster shell stuffed with onion and tomato stew, a pickled mussel emulsion and touches of pickles.
Meanwhile, the winner of the 2nd Tapas World Championship was Shuyun Chen, from the Spanish restaurant La Bellota, by Peter Gordon. Located in New Zealand, La Bellota offers authentic tapas from Spain as well as wine and cocktails. Chen’s creation, crunchy rice with pickled vegetables and tuna rolls, impressed the judges so much that she received top honors. Her dish aimed to pay homage to Spain by using some of its most emblematic products.
Chen will take home 6,000 euros in prize money, sponsored by the Interprofesional del Aceite de Oliva. She’ll also take advantage of her visit to Spain to get some new ideas for the restaurant back in New Zealand.
