Spain’s Grupo Gallo Expands into the U.S. Market

Spanish luxury broth brand Grupo Gallo has expanded into the U.S. retail food market with a range of premium broths that focus on authentic flavors, showcasing their Real Food from Spain concept.

The expansion is part of the brand’s partnership with esteemed Spanish chef José Andrés, a partnership that reflects the essence of Spanish cooking, from authentic flavors and fresh ingredients to time-honoured traditions and honest processes, with an aim to appeal to U.S. consumers who are increasingly seeking food products that feature quality ingredients.

Produced in Granollers, Catalonia, Spain, Grupo Gallo’s expansion into the U.S. market will involve three distinct products: chicken, vegetable, and a seafood broth intended for use with paella/fideuá. The chicken broth will contain 33% chicken content, an exceptionally high percentage for a commercial chicken broth. The seafood variety is made with 20% shrimp and 5% sofrito, a traditional Spanish sauce. Gallo’s vegetable broth will feature real vegetables, including onions, carrots, cabbage, spinach, leeks, and celery.

The initial rollout of Grupo Gallo’s three-pronged product line will be at Chicago-area grocery chain Mariano's, with more Kroger-owned chains such as Harris Teeter to follow.

The company’s U.S. expansion follows in the wake of its successful move into the Asian market in 2020, with the acquisition of Barcelona-based brand Ta-Tung. The brand entered the Asian ready-meals market with a product line fusing traditional Spanish flavors with flavors from Thailand, Cambodia, India, and Japan. These products are manufactured in Sant Vicenç dels Horts, Barcelona, with main markets in France, Portugal, and Italy.

Premium Spanish Broths in the Global Market

Grupo Gallo’s international expansion mirrors the efforts of other Spanish premium broth companies such as Aneto and El Paeller, both of which have successfully marketed a range of products to overseas consumer bases.

Aneto is renowned for its “100% natural” approach, with products including chicken, fish, vegetable, and specialized paella bases, all completely free from concentrates, fillers, flavor enhancers, and additives. These natural products are available in a range of formats, but typically come in Tetra Brik cartons of 1L or 330ml. They have a significant international presence in the United States and Canada, mainly in specialty stores and online retailers, as well as Western Europe.

El Paeller brings a hint of smokiness to its broths, with ingredients cooked over firewood, targeting the gourmet, ready-to-use paella broth market. Key formats include 1-liter glass bottles, available individually or in packs. El Paeller has successfully expanded into various international markets, including the US, Japan, Switzerland, France, Ukraine, Morocco, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
