
Wines from Rueda DO registered growth of 8% compared with 2021 and +32% compared with 2020
Rueda DO is celebrating a noteworthy accomplishment of late. The winemaking designation of origin issued almost 110 million back labels in 2022, indicative of its stellar performance.
These winemakers, who produce their wines in Castile-León, collectively broke their all-time sales record. In fact, their sales reflected an impressive 8% year-on-year growth compared with 2021, and growth of over 32% compared with 2020.
Rueda wines DO are made primarily from Verdejo grapes, which is the area’s native grape, and wineries there are known for creating fermented and aged wines. The back labels that were issued in 2022 were almost entirely for white wine, specifically still wine, sparkling wine, fortified wine, and Gran Vino de Rueda. The latter is a new category that refers to wines made in vineyards that are more than 30 years old and with a low yield, among other requirements.
According to a report by Nielsen, Rueda wines are the most widely consumed designation of origin in terms of quality white wines in all of Spain. Quality is extremely important to local winemakers, who strive to adhere to high standards.
