It’s that time of year again! The annual Cabrales Cheese Competition was recently held in Arenas de Cabrales, in Asturias, putting this delicious cheese squarely in the spotlight. This competition, which is a longstanding tradition held on the last Sunday of August and which has been organized for the last 50 years, set a new record this year.
After the cheeses are judged and a winner is chosen, the winning cheese is auctioned. In the 2018 edition, the winning cheese sold for 14,300 euros, the highest price ever—until 2019. This year the winning cheese was sold to El Llagar de Colloto, in Oviedo, for a whopping 20,500 euros. It was produced by Quesería Arangas.
This year, a total of 15 restaurants participated in the auction, including Casa Pedro, Parilla Ramón, La Cabana, Doña Concha, Carlos Tartiere, and Cocina Cabal, among others. And, for the first time this year, a restaurant outside Spain, Seville’s, in Dubai.
According to the president of PDO Cabrales in diariodegastronomia.com, “We’re very pleased with the interest in Cabrales cheese around the world. The fact that a restaurant in Dubai participated in the auction made the event international and we hope to further strengthen that position next year.”
