Esquire magazine has released its list of the Best New Restaurants in America for 2018. It sent its correspondents all over the country, from LA and San Francisco to Nyack, New York to Dallas, Texas, all in the name of compiling the most accurate list of top dining experiences.

Coming in at position 16 is Spanish restaurant Del Mar, in Washington, DC. This extremely popular locale, run by husband and wife duo Fabio and Maria Trabocchi, serves Spanish flavors to the city’s elite and has made quite a name for itself. A popular stop for former President Obama, the restaurant is described by Esquire as a “love letter to Spain.”

Del Mar maintains its Spanish identity thanks to Maria, who hails from Mallorca and helps ensure its “Iberian integrity.” Products are imported from all over Spain to provide a wholly authentic experience—one that has diners coming back for more. As the magazine suggests, it’s no easy feat to succeed in a city where super chef José Andrés reigns supreme, but Del Mar has done it. The restaurant, in the city’s District Wharf, serves seafood stews, tapas, charcoal grilled fish, paella and also has a raw bar. The primarily seafood-driven menu aims to share the flavors of Spain’s Mediterranean coast, but also features other stellar products such as Ibérico ham, lomo, and sobrasada (spreadable smoked pimentón sausage).
