Earlier this month Londoners enjoyed a Basque feast thanks to two heavyweight Spanish chefs: Eneko Atxa and Nieves Barragán. This special event was held at Eneko Basque Kitchen & Bar, the chef’s new restaurant in Covent Garden.
On this occasion, customers tucked into an extravagant 9-course meal featuring dishes such as beetroot tartare with olive oil caviar, piquillo peppers stiffed with smoked haddock brandade, pig’s head croquettes with quince aloili, and goat’s cheese ice cream with licorice—a true feast for the senses. The dishes were specially paired with wines from Atxa’s family winery, Gorka Izagirre, in Bilbao. This dinner was served with a special cause in mind: all of the money raised was donated to Action Against Hunger.
Eneko Atxa also runs his Michelin-star restaurant Azurmendi in the Basque Country, which consistently appears on the world’s best restaurants lists. Nieves Barragán was previously the executive chef at popular London restaurant Barrafina, and in late 2017 she opened her own Spanish locale in the city, called Sabor. Both Basque chefs have played an important role in introducing and popularizing their regional cuisine in the UK.
