Grup Balfegó Opens Gourmet Center

Balfegó bluefin tuna has just become the first in the world to get its own space dedicated to the gastronomy of this noble fish.



 

Located in downtown Barcelona, Tunateca Balfegó Espai Gastronòmic is a 300 meter-squared space that combines bluefin tuna-centric gastronomy with a series of different activities and initiatives designed to give people an in-depth look at the wide range of applications for this species.

The gastronomic experience at Tunateca Balfegó is in the capable hands of Pere Lladó, who has designed a double-menu featuring the cuisines of Japan and the Mediterranean, with bluefin tuna as the unifying theme. One of his objectives is to demonstrate to customers the possibilities for each part of the fish. The Japanese menu is under the supervision of chef Hideki Matsuhisa of Barcelona's Michelin-star restaurant Koy Shunka; while Marc Miró of La Llotja restaurant in Grup Balfegó's home base of L'Ametlla de Mar, combines tuna with Mediterranean ingredients.

In addition to gastronomy in its purest sense, Tunateca Balfegó was also created as a center for experimentation and dissemination, learning and teaching, and a range of activities including tastings, cooking classes, or even classes on how to break down a whole tuna, and more. It will also serve as a showcase for different tuna creations by important Spanish chefs from all over the country. One such chef might be Martín Berasategui, who is currently the world ambassador of Balfegó bluefin tuna.
 
This is the first space of its kind, although Grup Balfegó has plans to continue expanding this concept to other cities – even beyond Spanish borders.
