Germany's leading gourmet food magazine, Der Feinschmecker, has been presenting the Olio Award to the very best extra virgin olive oils since 2003. Around 500 olive oils from all over the world have participated in the competition.

At this 17th edition of the award, a panel of judges comprising 11 international olive oil experts (from Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, and Croatia) blind tasted the oils, submitted from 12 countries, during a 3-day period at the magazine's headquarters in Hamburg.

The competition rules and the evaluation of oil samples were adapted in recent years to the international regulations for the world's leading olive oil competitions. As a result, the oils were organized into three categories, based on their intensity: slightly fruity, moderately fruity, and intensely fruity. The magazine presents three awards per category.

Spanish oils' performance was as follows: there were 28 Spanish oils among the 50 best, along with 19 from Italy, 1 from Slovenia, 1 from Portugal and 1 from Croatia. Last year, there were 16 oils from Spain among the best, 32 from Italy, 1 from Croatia and 1 from Portugal. In 2013, there were 12 Spanish and 35 Italian, and in 2009 there were 30 Italian and 6 Spanish.

Two EVOOs from Spain, Castillo de Canena and Aceites de Mirasol, received the top prize in the moderately and intensely fruity categories, respectively. Aceites Hacienda el Palo took second prize in the moderately fruity category, and Aceites Campoliva and Aceites Cortijo la Torre received second and third place, respectively, in the lightly fruity category. Oro del Desierto received third place in the moderately fruity category.

This very positive performance is corroborated by other prestigious international awards and confirms the recognition that Spanish EVOOs are receiving in this and other markets outside around the world.

The latest edition of Der Feinschmecker includes a report on the most recent Olio Award, highlighting the success of Spanish EVOO producers, whose oils, which have "exquisite and intensely fruity and herb aromas," received many top distinctions.
