Bodegas Neo, Spanish Wines With a Rock n’ Roll Soul
Founded by three friends in 1999, Bodegas Neo is nestled in the heart of Ribera del Duero, one of Spain’s most internationally renowned wine regions. This is not the only defining characteristic of this Spanish winery, however, another is the rock n’ roll spirit that its owners Javier, Julio and José embody.
Did you know that Bodegas Neo the only winery we know of that boasts its own, in-house recording studio, the Neo Music Box, as well as a production company called El Planeta Sonora.
In any case, it is the winery’s range of fantastic wines that brings us here today, a selection that includes five reds and one rosado wine, all with DO Ribera del Duero classification; and one white wine made with Verdejo grapes from nearby DO Rueda. Of these, the most famous is undoubtedly the winery’s Neo, a wine that is made from 100% Tinta del País (Tempranillo) grapes harvested from the fifty to sixty year old vines grown on the La Horra vineyards. The wine, which has been featured over the years in both Spanish and international press alike—including Decanter, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast magazines, the latter two of which gave the 2011 vintage 90 and 91 points, respectively—is aged for twenty months in 80% French, 20% American barrels, yielding a wine that is as powerful as it is elegant.
Another of the winery’s great achievements is Neo Punta Esencia, which also begins in the La Horra vineyards and ends up as a wine that is aged for twenty-four months in 100% French oak. This exquisite wine has been equally lauded (91 points in Wine Spectator for the 2011 vintage), but has a very limited production of around 4,600 bottles.
The winery’s remaining red wines are El Arte de Vivir (four months in oak), El Tío Juanillo (made from forty-year-old vines and aged for six months in oak), Disco (six months in oak), and Sentido (twelve months in oak), while Crazy Tempranillo is a young 100% Tempranillo rosé, and Motivo Verdejo is the winery’s only white wine. And though all of the wines clearly reflect the expert knowledge of the wine makers and the excellence of the grapes, they also seem to capture the joie de vivre of the people behind this famed winery—something that can be seen, for example, in the new “amplifier” wine boxes that the wines are packaged in for shipment to the sixty countries all over the world where they can be found.
Bodegas Neo is also delighted to share its love of wine and music with the rest of the world, welcoming visitors to its strikingly modern installations in the town of Castrillo de la Vega. See you there?
