Climate change is a serious issue for winemakers. In some regions, growing grapes is becoming more challenging, harvest times are coming increasingly earlier, and the vine growth cycle is shifting. To adapt to the current situation, winemakers are changing up their farming methods and grape varieties.

But the industry is also partly responsible for the situation. According to winemag.com, a recent study suggests that winemakers are responsible for 0.3% of global GHG emissions.

In this scenario, there is one company in particular that’s doing something about it: Bodegas Torres.

The company came up with a proposal: Torres & Earth, the goal of which is reduce its GHG emissions by 30% by 2020. They have installed a biomass boiler to turn organic residue into electricity, they have a solar array to provide energy for the vineyard, and they use geothermal installations to maintain the temperature at their facilities. They’re also looking at carbon capture and storage and they have a “climate change vineyard” where they experiment with different elements. To date, Torres has reduced its carbon emissions by 25.6%.

Now it’s working to help the rest of the industry. It helped create the Spanish certification program for carbon reduction, Wineries For Climate Protection, and it’s working on the launch of the International Wineries for Climate Change, which will seek to reduce carbon emissions by an impressive 80% by 2045.

Miguel Torres, the family patriarch, believes that “his family can be influential on the shifting climate… and is leading the charge for the country’s wineries to reduce their contributions to GHG and adapt to new climate realities,” according to the magazine.
