A selection of the world’s most exquisite wines were in the spotlight the other day as part of Wine Spectator’s highly exclusive Top 10 Tasting, held as part of the New York Wine Experience. The tasting was held at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel.

This prestigious magazine has been publishing a list of the top 100 wines since 1988, and it holds a special tasting to highlight those wines that make it into the top 10. The Spanish representative among these elite wines was Gran Reserva 890 2005 Selección Especial, from La Rioja Alta, SA, coming in at number 4.

Guillermo de Aranzabal, the president of the winery, was at the event to present and explain his wine to the select group of attendees. The magazine described this wine as “a textbook example of traditional Rioja wine and confirmation that the best wines require a significant investment of time and effort,” according to periodistadigital.com.

Gran Reserva 890 wine is made primarily from Tempranillo grapes from the winery’s vineyards that are more than four decades old. It’s aged for six years in American oak casks, and the final product stands out as a smooth, complex, sophisticated, well-balanced wine with balsamic and spicy notes, elegant acidity, and good structure. Indubitably, it deserves to be on a list of the world’s best.
