Spanish Wines Have Strong Presence at StarChefs Rising Stars Event in Atlanta

Top wines from all over Spain were served at the honorees’ and gala dinners, and during the gala dinner at a special table

Spanish flavors recently invaded Atlanta, thanks to the StarChefs Rising Stars Tasting Gala and Awards Ceremony. Held on February 19th and 20th and organized by the online magazine Star-Chefs.com, these events are generally focused on honoring standout members of the foodservice industry, such as chefs and sommeliers, for their innovation, influence and impact.

At the gala dinner, attendees enjoyed 14 different dishes and beverage pairings along with signature cocktails. Around 400 people attended, among them trade professionals, members of the media, and consumers.  Spain was represented in several ways during the course of the 2-day event through promotional efforts by Wines From Spain.

During the honorees’ dinner, held before the Gala and attended by 125 people, two Spanish wines were served (selected by Rising Star Sommelier Vajra Stratigos): Avancia Godello and Txomin Etxaniz Blanco 2017.

Melissa Davis, sommelier of Staple Hause restaurant in Atlanta, took home StarChefs Rising Stars Sommelier Award presented by Wines from Spain USA.

Additionally, Spanish wines were paired with some of the dishes at the gala dinner, including Azul y Garanza Tempranillo 2016 (DO Navarra), Piquitos Moscato 2016 (DO Valencia), Naverán Brut Nature 2014 (DO Cava), Juan Gil Silver Monastrell 2015 (DO Jumilla), and Terraprima 2013, Can Ràfols dels Caus (DO Catalunya).

During the gala, a selection of other Spanish wines were available for tasting at a stand, among them Napoleón Amontillado (DO Jerez-Xérès-Sherry), Cuveé de O Mencía 2015 (VO Valdeorras), Fillaboa 2016 Albariño (DO Rías Baixas), Marqués de Murrieta Capellanía Reserva (DOCa Rioja) and Conde de San Cristóbal 2012 (DO Ribera del Duero).
