Wine education at a High Level with the Club of Wine Academics

ICEX - Wines from Spain and Extenda Andalusia present their wines to the members of the WSET-Club of Wine Academics

Finally it's possible again: making contacts, having a lively personal exchange - paired with fantastic wines on the palate. On Sunday, 12 September 2021 from 1 PM to 5:30 PM, wine journalist David Schwarzwälder will present two top themes of regional developments in Spain.

The new wines of Andalusia

Andalusia looks back on a wine-growing history of more than 3000 years and has for some time been developing more and more into a centre of individual projects and new independent wines. The terroir, the concentration on autochthonous, forgotten grape varieties and high altitudes in the Andalusian hinterland play a decisive role. In addition to the traditional wines from the sherry triangle, more and more red and white still wines are causing a sensation: be it in the mountains of the Sierras de Málaga, where national and international winemakers experiment with local and international grape varieties. Or Condado de Huelva, a region directly on the Atlantic and on the border with Portugal, which is increasingly becoming the focus of international wine criticism. The natural conditions, high altitudes and proximity to both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic characterise the viticulture and give rise to special wines.

The tasting program includes white wines without fortification from the Marco de Jerez (Vinos de Pasto), wines from high altitudes, e.g. from the Axarquía, an Andalusian pint noir and dry red wines from the promising autochthonous grape variety Tintilla de Rota, known to most wine lovers as Graciano.

The path to terroir and zone classification

Another highlight of the tasting demonstrates the path to the terroir idea and zone classification in the DOCa Rioja, DOP Bierzo and DOCa Priorat and will be examined in olfactory detail using exemplary wines.
