Olive Japan 2016 was recently held on the island nation, and the results were announced on April 25th. The international extra virgin olive oil competition provides a very unique opportunity for international companies to showcase their products to the Japanese market, and it includes activities to help them promote their businesses and expand their foothold there.
This competition, now in its fourth edition, is one of the most important in the world, and the panel of judges comprises figures from Japan and other leading olive oil producing countries.
As is to be expected, Spanish oils performed extremely well in the competition, taking home numerous awards. It was the country with the greatest number of entries, which totaled 177, followed by Italy at a distance, with 110. Of those, 131 received medals, with the following breakdown: 6 premier (of 11 awarded in total), 70 gold (of 213 awarded) and 55 silver (out of 196). A total of 600 olive oils competed.
The premier winners were Almazara As Pontis, Castillo de Canena, Nobleza del Sur, Olival Co. Reina Co. and Simply Spanish Product. Gold medal winners included the following companies: Aceites Conde de Mirasol, Almazaras de la Subbetica, Casa de Hualdo, De Oliva, Hispasur Aceites, Masia el Altet, and Molino Virgen de Fatima. Silver medal winners included Kimura Co., Baeturia Organic, Aceites Guadalquivir, Marques de Oliva, Olis Sole, Oleicola Jaen, and Perfecto Matas Llamas.
Of 11 premier medals awarded, the highest honor, Spanish olive oils took home 6.
