Spanish Michelin-Star Chef Eneko Atxa Opens Restaurant in Lisbon
Spanish Michelin star chef Eneko Atxa is taking his culinary expertise beyond Spain’s borders, opening a new restaurant in Lisbon, Portugal. His new local, called Eneko Atxa Lisboa, offers a fine dining experience and, according to the chef, this new venture reflects “two projects in one,” according to 20minutos.es. There’s “Basque,” which is more informal and simpler, and “Eneko Lisboa,” which aims to convey the “spirit of Azurmendi” through its two tasting menus. Both concepts are combined in the same venue in the Alcântara neighborhood, on the Tagus River.
Back in Spain, Atxa’s locale, Azurmendi, is considered to be among the best in the world. He was one of the youngest chefs ever to receive a third Michelin star for that restaurant. Azurmendi has also be named the Most Sustainable Restaurant by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and it’s ranked 26th on that same list.
Other international chefs have also opened up restaurants in Lisbon, such as Hans Neuner and Joachim Koerper, as well as Spanish chef Martín Berasategui, who opened his restaurant 50 Seconds about a year ago.
According to Berasategui, there’s a “wave of haute cuisine in Portugal” at the moment, and it’s an incredibly special time for the country’s dining scene. Today the city is home to 26 restaurants with Michelin stars.
