The Importers Fair 2019 was recently held in Tokyo, on May 20th. It was jointly sponsored by ICEX and the Spanish Embassy’s Economic and Commercial Office in Tokyo. The fair catered primarily to Japanese importers and sought to promote and expand Spanish product distribution in Japan while also increasing the visibility of Spanish cuisine.
This event, which was held at Hotel New Otani Tokyo, welcomed 60 importers and more than 500 visitors. Wines—red, rosé, white, and sparkling—were the main attraction, although olive oil, table olives, and meat products like ham were also popular.
A seminar entitled “Native grapes and the new wine scene in Spain” was given by Tomoko Ebisawa, a journalist, and Yujo Satake, a wine blogger. It addressed grape varieties such as Garnacha, Godello, and Mencía and was followed by a wine tasting.
This fair will travel the country during the summer and fall, making stops in Osaka on June 11th, Nagoya on June 25th, Kanazawa on July 8th, Fukuoka on July 13th, and Tokyo again on October 29th.
This series of fairs was also held last year, attracting 250 importers and over 2,00 visitors, among them trade professionals such as sommeliers, members of the trade media, and hotel and restaurant executives. This year’s edition is expected to attract similar numbers and boost sales of Spanish products in Japan.
