Spaniards are gearing up to celebrate the Feast of the Three Kings on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany. There’s a whole set of unique traditions that occur on this holiday in Spain.

People eat a very special round cake called Roscón de Reyes. The cake is topped with candied fruit and is often filled with either cream of chocolate. There are two small figures hidden inside the cake: a crown and a bean. Whoever finds the crown in their piece of cake gets to wear the crown that comes with the cake, and whoever finds the bean must pay for the cake.

Revelers looking to celebrate in the Washington, DC area can order their Roscón and pick them up at Spanish restaurant Taberna del Alabardero. The cakes are available in two sizes ($45 and $60). The restaurant will also be serving Roscón for dessert on January 4th, 5th and 6th. At Jaleo Bethesda, you can stop by and enjoy their Three Kings Brunch, which includes several exciting treats for kids. They can meet the Three Kings, do some arts and crafts, and eat Roscón, and there are prizes for those that find a bean in their cake. Cakes can also be ordered and eaten at home on January 5th and 6th.

For those celebrating in the UK, Ibérica is offering Roscón as well, and they can be picked up from the restaurants on the 4th, 5th and 6th. Each cake serves between 6 to 8 people. This is a great way for Spaniards to celebrate their holiday traditions and for everyone else to learn more about Spanish culture.
