This year’s edition of San Sebastián Gastronomika 2019, the 21st edition of which will be held from October 6th to the 9th, will also celebrate a major historical milestone: Juan Sebastian Elcano’s first round-the-world navigation, 500 years ago.

In honor of the Basque explorer, chefs from all the world over—Brazil, Indonesia, Chile, Argentina, and beyond—will be cooking at the event in a bid to highlight diverse cuisines, share the latest trends, and enable attendees to travel the world through flavors and aromas.

Leading Spanish chefs will be participating and sharing their latest discoveries and innovations, among them Ángel León, Andoni Luis Aduriz, Josean Alija, Elena and Juan Mari Arzak, Maca de Castro, Eneko Atxa, Martin Berasategui, Hilario Arbelaitz, Dani García, and Joan Roca. There will be several competitions, among them the 2nd National Potato Salad Championship, the 4th edition of the Ruinart Sommelier Challenge, and the 10th National Grilling Competition. There will also be workshops, wine sessions, and private cooking sessions.

Carme Ruscalleda will be honored at this year’s event for her success in “translating a landscape and an intimacy into a cultural and gastronomic story of the highest level, even having exported her world to Japan with great success.”

This year’s event is expected to surpass last years, which welcomed over 13,000 visitors, more than 200 speakers, almost 500 journalists, 170 exhibitors, and 70 chefs. There were also 55 nationalities represented.
