Christmas is around the corner, and people in Spain are getting in the spirit by visiting holiday markets all around the country.

In Madrid, shoppers head to Plaza Mayor for one of Spain’s oldest Christmas markets, and also one of the largest, with over 100 booths. Items for sale include everything from handmade toys to figures for Nativity scenes, all against the backdrop of the historic square.

Another market in Madrid that’s well worth a visit is the Christmas Sweet Fair. Held in Plaza Isabel II, there’s no shortage of stalls selling delicious holiday treats, many coming from all over Spain. You can eat your own weight in turron, mantecados and polvorones, among other wonderful sweets, and don’t forget the hot chocolate and churros to warm you up as you make your way around the market.

Bilbao, in the Basque Country, also has a very lovely market on Calle Bailén. While visitors can buy all manner of unique handmade gifts, one of the main attractions is actually the food on offer. Traditional Basque flavors are on full display as stalls offer pintxos, and shoppers can buy everything from fruit and vegetables to honey, cheese, and sweets. There’s also live music with traditional Basque instruments and dance being performed around the market.

In Zaragoza, the Christmas market is a sight to behold. There are over 50 stalls selling gifts and food, as well as a merry-go-round, an ice-skating rink and a 1,800 square meter Nativity scene with 100 different figures, more than half of them life-sized.

In Spain there’s no shortage of festive spirit when the holidays roll around!
