The World Restaurant Awards are around the corner, but the shortlist of nominations for 2019 has been released and the official ceremony will be held on February 18th at the Palais Brongniart in Paris. These distinctions, which aim to “celebrate excellence, integrity and diversity,” are decided following the ruling of a panel of 50 men and 50 women who are culinary professionals, journalists and influencers. They include Rene Redzepi, Alex Atala, Elena Arzak, Massimo Bottura and Clare Smyth. The winners will be announced in 18 categories, such as “Ethical Thinking” and “Off-Map Destination” at this first edition of the awards.

There are three nominees from Spain in this edition. In the “Enduring Classics” category, Elkano is among the potential winners. This Michelin star restaurant in the Basque Country is known as a simple, old-fashioned locale that serves outstanding fish and seafood prepared on open-air charcoal grills.

In the “Forward Drinking” category, Mugaritz is included on the list. This restaurant, helmed by Andoni Luis Aduriz, has been included on the best restaurants in the world lists for many years. Also in the Basque Country, it has two Michelin stars and is known for its highly innovative cuisine.

In the “Original Thinking” category there are two Spanish nominees: Mugaritz, again, and also Enigma. This Barcelona restaurant is the work of Albert Adrià. With one Michelin star, it stands out for its “groundbreaking design” as well as the dining experience, which takes place “in seven different zones,” according to viamichelin.com.
