In Houston, Spanish restaurants offer up an ample selection of food and wines from Spain - the fun part is that there’s usually a twist. As one would expect in the land of Tex Mex, fusion is embraced with gusto - appearing as a splash of French or Latin added to the mix!
BCN Taste &Tradition
Located in an iconic art deco villa, BCN offers a special setting for elegant tapas with elaborate presentation and a seasonal menu - plus the option of a fully plant-based menu for vegans. Cocktails are famous at this spot - like their BCN Gin & Tonic. You can also soak up the Balearics with a Manzanilla Gin & Tonic - Menorcan Xoriguer Gin with manzanilla sherry and chamomile, salud!
Must try: Poached quail eggs and Lobster Caldereta de Menorca
BCN creators Ignacio Torras and executive chef Luis Roger fired up their wood grills again in 2019 for a new homage to Spanish gastronomy - MAD. Named for Madrid’s airport code, MAD is a taste of madrileño nightlife through the medium of tapas and grilled-everything. Midnight in Madrid is their much anticipated happy hour, and you can top up the booze with your dessert - MAD’s cinco bombones are hand-crafted pralines filled with Spanish liquor, such as Patxarán.
Must try: A Taste of Madrid and Paella Gin & Tonic (why not?!)
Having won the Award of Excellence in 2020, El Meson remains one of Houston’s favorite Spanish restaurants - with a Latin touch. There’s an extensive menu of classic dishes from across Spain, no less than six varieties of paella and a Spanish wine list as long as your arm - all set against a cozy backdrop.
Must try: Piquillos del Mar and Albóndigas al Jerez
Costa Brava Bistro
Headed up by Master Sommelier Angeles Dueñas, Costa Brava Bistro boasts an ample wine list. Partnering with Chef Kitty Bailey, the Mediterranean-inspired fine dining duo promise Spanish and French cuisine made with love, no less. Houston Chronicle featured it in Houston’s Top 100 Restaurants (No.28) in 2019. The menu offers a fresh take on Spanish classics - think jamón Serrano croquettes with bechamel foam or gazpacho Andaluz with cucumber relish.
