Spain's White Revival
Ahead of her masterclass on Spanish Whites at the 2022 Wines from Spain Annual Trade Tasting in London, Master of Wine Sam Caporn reflects on a category brimming with quality and excitement
One of the many, many things I love about being in the wine industry, is that I’m always learning. I still find it thrilling to discover new wines, grapes and regions; tasting something unusual and eclectic always elicits excitement! So whilst the variety, versatility and sheer quality of the wines of Spain have been much recognised and awarded over the years, it still remains fascinating to unearth historical indigenous grape varieties and to hear about traditional bodegas hand-picking grapes from vineyards overlooking the sparkling sea, made to marry with local cuisines that have been enjoyed over generations.
Indeed, arguably the secret of the success of a host of Spain’s premium white wines is that they so expertly manage to blend tradition with innovation, from protecting centuries old varieties to championing the creation of new DOs so the wines can encapsulate the characteristics of the local terroir within the bottle.
Grapes such as Ondarrabi Zuri, orange wines made from Albillo and white wines blended with Manzanilla sherry before being aged in barrel reflect the passion of winemakers who are looking both backwards for inspiration - to borrow the best of the past - but are also looking resolutely forwards to craft something that will still delight today, using modern winemaking techniques. The result is a beautiful blend of the old and the new that showcases why Spain remains such an exciting wine producing country and a veritable vinous treasure trove.
