The prestigious Michelin Guide recently held an event in Huntington Beach to announce the Michelin star winners for Los Angeles. The guide’s international director, Gwendal Poullennec, recognized the state of California in general, “praising it for its culinary diversity and agricultural bounty,” and highlighting local chefs’ ability to prepare creative dishes with local ingredients. In total, 28 restaurants in southern California were honored.

Most notably, Somni received its second Michelin star. This unique LA restaurant, run by José Andrés and Aitor Zabala, is located inside Andrés’ restaurant The Bazaar at the SLS Beverly Hills. Somni seats 10 at a single table and chefs create and serve a constantly-evolving menu to the few lucky diners who are able to get tickets, which start at $265. Andrés and Zabala offer a “multi-sensory culinary experience centered around a bespoke exhibition kitchen, where there are as many chefs as guests,” according to the Somni website. The 20-course tasting menu is paired with wine and “seasonal supplements.” The Michelin Guide highlights the restaurant as being “pure theater” and offering “surprise at every turn” and “mind-boggling attention to detail.”
