Spain officially has bragging rights when it comes to cookies as it has now become the fourth-largest producer of these sweet treats in the European Union, according to a recent report from Produlce, the Spanish Confectionery Association for 2018. At present, Spain is trailing Germany, Italy and the UK and is leading over the Netherlands and France by a large margin. Spain’s cookie producers export around 140,000 tons to the EU, and almost one out of every two kilos of cookies is exported. It’s also worth noting that 64% of sales are attributable to the UK, France and Portugal.
According to Produlce’s General Secretary, Rubén Moreno, “We are the most competitive and versatile cookie producer in Europe and the industry in Spain stands out for its extremely high quality standards.” According to the association’s report, exports to other markets also performed well, in particular the US, with growth of 8.6%, and Morocco, up 18.8%.
