Spanish wine was recently in the spotlight in Finland after one of the country’s leading wine publications, Viinilehti, published a report by journalist Sanna Pöyry, who was invited by ICEX to Galicia as part of a reverse trade mission.
Pöyry declared to Foods & Wines from Spain that “after years of dreaming about Galicia, I finally landed in this spectacular wine region in spring 2019 on a press trip organized by ICEX. During five days our group met several winemakers and wine people from wineries of Rías Baixas, Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra, learned a lot about Albariño's versatility and indigenous grapes, and admired the stunning scenery. Many people know Galicia for its white Albariño wines, but the region is also a fantastic source of historical grapes, as well as red Mencia that is at its most amazing on breathtakingly steep slopes of Ribeira Sacra".
There are currently a large number of Galician wines that are available through Finland’s national alcoholic beverage retailing monopoly, including the following: Formigo blanco 2018, Finca Viñoa 2019, Ramón do Casar Treixadura 2018, Casanova Treixadura, Ailalá 2018, from DO Ribeiro; Ronsel do Sil Vel’uveyra 2015 and Regina Viarum Mencia 2016 from DO Ribeira Sacra; O Luar do Sil Godello 2019, Valdesil Godello Sobre Lías 2014, and The Orange Republic Godello Sobre Lias 2016, from DO Valdeorras; Fragas Do Lecer Godello 2019 and Alma De Blanco Godello 2018 from DO Monterrei; and Zárate Balado Albariño 2018, Zárate Albariño 2018, Zárate Tras Da Viña Albariño 2017, Valmiñor Albariño 2017, Vionta Albariño 2016, Barbutin Albariño, Abadia De San Campio Albariño 2017, and Pulpo Albariño, among others, from DO Rías Baixas.
