Spanish wines recently got special treatment in Japan, as the prestigious Guía Peñín organized the Salón Selección Tokio, now in its sixth edition, to highlight some of the country’s best.

Hosted at the Hotel Hyatt Regency Tokyo, around 20 wineries with over 100 wines from 14 production zones attended, coming from Rioja, Ribera del Guadiana, La Mancha, Alicante, Bierzo, Navarra, Manchuela, Terra Alta, Rueda, VT Bajo Aragón, Cava, VT Castilla, VT Castilla y León, and Ribera del Duero. Attendees included local journalists, trade professionals, and opinion leaders, among others.

The event included a wine tasting and masterclass led by none other than José Peñín, given specially to an exclusive group of professionals. Peñín selected just five top wines that received 95 points or more in the latest edition of his guide.

Japan is an important market for Spanish wines, and exports have received a boost thanks to the entry into force of the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement in February of this year, which reduces the cost of exports for both parties. It also helps support wine consumption in that country and protects the geographical indications of agri-food products.
