The winners from the Wines from Spain awards in the United Kingdom, which distinguish “the very best of Spain currently available in the UK,” have been announced. A total of 106 wines received distinctions, and they come from more than 20 different regions all across the country, representing a range of grapes and styles. Of the total, 9 were declared to be “champions,” truly standing out in their particular categories. Winners will be able to feature a prestige seal on their bottles and will be included in a guide with information about Spanish wine for the UK market.
The champion wines were as follows: Freixenet’s Can Sala (Best Cava), Bodegas La Val’s Waitrose Viña Taboexa Albariño (Best Value White and Best Own Label), Bodegas Felix Sanz’s Viña Cimbrón Verdejo (Best White in Show), Señorio de Rubios’ Manuel d’Amaro Pedral (Best Discovery), Juan de la Barreda Acedo-Rico’s Torre de Barreda (Best Value Red), C&D Wines’ Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja (Best Red in Show), Williams & Humbert Alegría Manzanilla (Best Value Fortified), Osborne’s Amontillado 51-1 (Best Dry Fortified) and Fernando de Castilla Vermouth (Best Sweet Fortified).
The wines were judged by experts such as wine buyers and writers. The panel was chaired by Tim Atkin MW, and members included Peter McCombie MW, Sarah Abbott MW, Charles Metcalfe, Beth Willard, Sarah Benson, Ana Sapungiu, and others.
All of the winners will be available for tasting at Ibérica Victoria this fall, on October 2nd, so mark your calendar!
