The Perfect Spanish Wines for Your End of Summer Barbecue

The end of summer is officially on the horizon, however, there is still time to enjoy some classic American to-go dishes with Spanish wines!

The Perfect Spanish Wines for Your End of Summer Barbecue (1400)

It might seem natural to reach for a can of beer for your summer grilling, but pairing grilled food with a glass of vino instead can easily turn your meal into a gastronomic delight. Here’s a roundup of some of the best Spanish food pairings:

Fried Chicken | Cava

There’s a lot of oil, salt, and fat in fried chicken. With abundant acidity, effervescence, and complementary flavors, sparkling wine effortlessly cuts through all of it, cleansing and refreshing your palate with every bite. Cava is made the same way that Champagne is produced, but with different grapes – mainly with Macabeo, Xarel-lo, and Paralleda.

Shrimp Cocktail | Albariño

Albariño is a fantastic choice for pairing with exquisite dishes like ceviche, fish tacos, seafood pasta, and shrimp. Originates from the coast of Galicia in the Rias Baixas region of northern Spain. With aromas of lemons, limes, pear, grapefruit, honeysuckle, nectarine, and occasionally orange zest when sniffing your glass.

Crab Cakes | Verdejo

Verdejo is a crisp white wine that’s perfect year-round for its body and rich flavor. Verdejo is the indigenous white grape variety in Rueda, a region in northwestern Spain along the Duero River. The region traces the grape’s presence in Castilla y Leon back to the 11th century and, before that, to North Africa.
Like its Spanish sisters, Albariño from the Rias Baixas region and Macabeo (known as Viura in the Rioja region), Verdejo is a terrific food wine. Its citrusy notes and aroma — very similar to Sauvignon Blanc — pair particularly well with seafood, crab cakes and salads.

Pulled Pork | Rioja

Rioja wine pairs wonderfully with a slow-cooked pulled pork. The richness, spice and flavor of slow-cooked pulled pork needs a bold wine to work in harmony with the flavors. Choose a Rioja with plenty of fresh, bright fruit flavor, either a Cosecha or Crianza.

Hamburgers | Monastrell

Hamburgers are the leading choice in American comfort food and wine has been collecting fans for thousands of years all over the globe. Combine both and you get the perfect summer pairing. Known in much of the world as Mourvèdre, it’s a grape of Spanish origin. Monastrell pairs exquisitely with rich foods like hamburgers to absorb the high tannin.
