As demand for Spanish wines in China grows, local consumers are becoming increasingly informed, thanks to the Guía Peñín. The famous wine guide has published its first digital edition in Chinese, featuring reviews of 2,000 wines from more than 200 producers all over Spain.

According to the guide director, “The Chinese market is increasingly mature and experienced, and we see that consumers are extremely interested in learning about wine,” according to The guide for China was officially launched in mid-November during the popular ProWine China fair, which was held in Shanghai.

Chinese consumers’ interest in wine has been increasing over time, and annual growth of the market stands at 26%. Spanish producers would like to strengthen their standing in China, as there is considerable scope for growth. Moreover, many producers view the Asian market as very far away and very complicated; as a result, Spanish wine is not a popular product at the moment.

That being said, now is a great time for Spanish winemakers to start trying to gain a foothold in China as consumers there are starting to develop an interest in wine from other countries.

It’s worth noting that this guide is not a translation of the Spanish guide but, rather, an entirely unique guide written specifically for the Chinese consumer. It includes the same information though, such as name of the wine and winery, vintage, DO, grape varieties, score and tasting notes.
