Cava makers are, appropriately enough, opening up a bottle of cava to celebrate the big news: exports of this sparkling wine set a new record in 2018, according to the DO Cava Regulatory Council.
In 2018, a total of 244.5 million bottles of cava were produced, worth 1.146 billion euros. Of that, an impressive 165 million bottles were sold outside Spain, reflecting growth of 1.8% in volume and 4.3% in value in year-on-year terms. The main destination markets are Germany, Belgium, the US, the UK, and France. Other markets where the popularity of Spanish cava has soared include Russia, Poland and Lithuania.
It’s worth noting that, although total production slipped by 3.2% year-on-year, 2018 was the fourth-best year in production terms. Moreover, last year, producers sold more bottles of cava than in 2017 and at a higher price. There’s also a notable interest among consumers in “different” cavas, such as premium bottles, for which production expanded by 20.3%, and organic cavas, which saw production skyrocket by 76%.
