Ramón Bilbao Begins Organic Conversion for Plots in Rioja and Rueda

Ramón Bilbao winery has an ambitious sustainability program in place and will be releasing its first organic wines later this year

Ramón Bilbao is making moves towards greater sustainability. This leading winery, based in Haro, La Rioja, has started organic conversion for vineyard plots in two areas, Rioja and Rueda. The process generally takes about three years and wines cannot be released until the transition is complete. Earlier this year it obtained organic certification for wineries in both DOs under the Wineries for Climate Protection scheme, and at the moment it’s looking to obtain accreditation with Ecocert.

The winery is expected to launch its very first organic wines later this year, specifically a Rueda white and a Rioja red, using grapes sourced from other organic vineyards. According to head winemaker, Rodolfo Bastida, “Our use of technology and on-the-job experience means we are able to map weather conditions and disease control requirements plot-by-plot, and this showed us that a seven-hectare vineyard in Yerga and certain plantings of our Verdejo in Rueda were ripe for organic certification.

The winery has a sustainability program in place and it is currently being implemented ahead of schedule. Ramón Bilbao is dedicated to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, reducing waste, improving energy efficiency and managing water and aims to reduce waste, GHG and energy by 20% by this year. Moreover, Bastida is using precision viticulture to maximize the vineyards’ potential.
