DO Rioja wines enjoyed a moment of glory recently in Guatemala as part of a blind tasting, held at the end of October. The event, hosted at the Hotel Casa Santo Domingo in Antigua Guatemala and organized in part by the Spanish Embassy’s Economic and Commercial Office in Guatemala City, catered to trade professionals such as sommeliers, culinary school professors, and representatives from local hotels and restaurants.

The Spanish wines received an incredibly warm reception as well as high scores from all attendees, who also expressed interest in attending another tasting scheduled for late November. Additionally, they suggested that the Spanish wines they tried offered great value for money, and some participating chefs said they were interested in importing some of the wines in the tasting. Lastly, several participants said they would include some of the wines from the tasting on their wine lists at their respective establishments. The most popular wines in the tasting was Carlos Moro Crianza 2015, Izadi Crianza 2015, and LAN Crianza 2013.

Other tastings have been held throughout the year, including one featuring cava in July, another with Ribera del Duero wines in April, and another with Rías Baixas wines in March. All of them were extremely successful.
