Wine & Spirits magazine, a leading industry publication, recently released its list of the top 100 wineries in the world. To celebrate, for the 16th year in the row, the magazine invited all of the winners to a very special party, where winemakers were able to meet each other and all attendees had the chance to sample a very wide range of top-flight wines. The event was held on October 10th.
The final list included eight wineries from Spain. They were Do Ferreiro, a winery in Galicia, where Gerardo Mendez has been behind the operation for two decades; R. López de Heredia, based in Haro, La Rioja, and which has been in the business for more than a century; Pere Ventura, which has developed a name worldwide for its wines and cavas; Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, where Pérez is often referred to as a visionary winemaker and “wine wizard;” La Rioja Alta, also in Haro, La Rioja, and specializing in wines made from Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo grapes; Luis A. Rodriguez Vazquez, in Arnoia, Galicia, where the team has been making stellar Ribeiro wines for about 30 years; Suertes del Marqués, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which has been producing wines since 2006 in the Orotova Valley; and Vega Sicilia, which has a lengthy history in the industry and is located in DO Ribera del Duero.
Said the magazine’s editor, Josh Greene, “We took a different approach to our tasting this year by focusing on specific regions and delving deeper into them… Our concentrated tastings led to fiercer competition among the great wines of the world to earn a spot in our Top 100,” according to wineindustryadvisor.com.
