Spanish wine was recently on everyone’s lips in Shanghai thanks to a special masterclass given by British wine expert Jancis Robinson, MW.

Held on February 24th, this activity sought to help raise the profile of Spanish wines in China and was part of ICEX’s communication campaign in the country, which is an important market for Spanish wineries.

The class was attended primarily by trade professionals and opinion leaders, and Robinson highlighted nine wines from some of Spain’s top Designations of Origin: Ribera del Duero, Jerez, Valle de la Orotava, Valdeorras, Cava, Rioja, Priorat, Bierzo, and Conca de Barberà. Her focus was to underline the quality and diversity of Spanish wines as part of her tasting.

Other masterclasses are scheduled in China’s main cities in the coming months, and the next one will be led by Sara Heller, MW, in Chengdu on March 18th.

Spain is among the top 10 exporters of wine to China. In 2017, it ranked fourth, behind France, Australia and Chile and ahead of Italy, sending a total of 67.9 million liters to the Asian giant, according to decanter.com.
