Carlos Bastarreche, the Ambassador of Spain, recently paid tribute not only to those wineries recognized as part of the 2019 Wines from Spain Awards but also to Spanish wineries in general as their products continue to excel on the world’s wine stage.
Out of the 100 winning wines from the 2019 awards, 13 were deemed to have performed exceptionally well and were awarded “Champion” status at the embassy event, which was attended by shippers, producers, Spanish dignitaries and the press.

The event was the culmination of the awards process that started back in July when a stellar line-up of judges, under the expert eye of Spanish aficionado Tim Atkin MW, blind-tasted their way through hundreds of Spanish wines to arrive at their definitive list of the top 100. In October and November, a selection of those winning wines toured around the UK as part of the Eat Spain Drink Spain campaign, an initiative that shines a spotlight on Spain through collaborations with existing consumer wine shows and local wine merchants. Trade and press were given the opportunity to taste the whole line-up at a special tasting held at Basque Cookery School Mimo London on November 4th.
Of particular note this year was the impressive growth of white wines. A massive 38% of all winners were whites, a very satisfying increase from ten years ago when the percentage was a mere 10%. A clear coming of age of white wines from Spain!
