Wagyu Beef Ham from León: Great Taste 2026 Supreme Champion

Spanish exports of greenhouse vegetables (hortalizas), field vegetables, fruits, and nuts achieved a historic high, with a record turnover of €4.6 billion between September 2025 and May 2026, according to a report compiled by AgroBank and Agrifood Comunicación.

The 2026 Sector Report on Fruit and Vegetables shows that Spanish greenhouse vegetables in particular achieved a trade surplus of €4.2 billion, another record result. Spain continues to lead the way as the EU’s leading producer of fruits and vegetables, accounting for 29.3% of total output. Spain ranks eleventh in the world for greenhouse vegetable exports, with production of 29.1 million tons, according to FAO data.

Green Shoots for Spain’s Vegetable Sector
Greenhouse vegetables are the key driver of Spain's food exports. The country is the EU leader in greenhouse vegetables, producing 61,471 hectares of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines across the latter half of 2025 and the first half of 2026, with the fertile region of Andalusia accounting for 76% of this area. Overall, this is a 2.76% increase over the previous five-year average.

Outside of the greenhouse, exports of vegetables cultivated in open fields continue an upward trajectory. The trade balance of these exports has seen record numbers every year since 2019. This year’s figure of €2.4 billion is no exception.

Murcia leads the way for open-field cultivation with an area of approximately 35,000 hectares. This is closely followed by Castile-La Mancha (33,000), a key region for onion and garlic production, and Andalusia (28,800), with the Valencian Community accounting for 13,900 hectares. These four regions account for around 75% of the total cultivation area in Spain.

Fruitful Times
The historic numbers extend to melons and watermelons, which achieved record exports of €959 million. Castile-La Mancha leads melon production, with 240,732 tonnes (37.5 per cent of the total), while Andalusia is Spain's principal exporting province for watermelon, accounting for around 40% of Spain's total exports across 13,599 hectares, a 4.5% increase on 2024.

Spanish berry exports reached a total of 385,205 tonnes, worth €1.9 billion euros, an impressive 16.1% increase on the average for the last five years. Strawberries are the star crop, with production totalling 339,920 tonnes. Blueberries are another key crop, with steady growth that puts 2025/2026 numbers at 70,522 tonnes.

Spain’s stone fruit sector maintained its dominance in the EU rankings, with production numbers rising by 13% to 332,872 tonnes in the first half of 2026. A harvest of 1.91 million tonnes is forecast for 2026.

Success in a Nutshell
Spanish nut exports continue their steady growth, with two products showing particularly good progress.

The Spanish almond harvest is expected to reach over 467,000 tonnes, a 27.6% increase on the previous year and 36% above the five-year average. Meanwhile, Spain’s burgeoning pistachio production is set to reach record highs, with 79,209 hectares (43 per cent above the average, notably in Castile-La Mancha), and is projected to reach 34,017 tonnes. This marks a 42% increase on the previous year, a remarkable figure when taking into account the fact that over half of the area under cultivation has not yet come into production.
