It’s official! The top-ranking restaurants on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2019 have been announced, and more than a few Spanish restaurants made the grade. The names were released in Singapore yesterday.
There were three restaurants in Spain among the top ten—a major achievement and a testament to the quality and renown of Spanish gastronomy and chefs. Coming in at number three was Asador Extebarri, in Atxondo, run by Bittor Arguinzoniz. In seventh place was Mugaritz, in San Sebastián, run by Andoni Luis Aduriz, and in ninth place is Disfrutar, in Barcelona, run by a trio of chefs: Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, and Mateu Casañas.
Other Spanish names that appeared on the list include Azurmendi, by Eneko Atxa, which as 14th; Tickets, by Albert Adrià, 20th; Elkano, by Aitor Arregi, 30th; and Nerua, at the Guggenheim Museum, by Josean Alija, 32nd. Most of these restaurants increased notably in the rankings, with Nerua improving by 25 positions, Tickets by 23 positions and Azurmendi by an impressive 29 positions.
This extremely prestigious ranking is created based on voting by more than 1,000 experts in gastronomy on five continents.
