The results are in for the recently-held Asian Sparkling Wine Masters 2019 competition, and products from Spain performed quite well. This contest is especially interesting because it evaluates wines strictly based on style and price and not on region. Moreover, competing wines are blind-tasted, further supporting the impartiality of the competition. The judging panel is comprised of wine experts, sommeliers, and senior procurement managers. Winners receive gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as the Master accolade, reserved specifically for the most exceptional wines of the bunch.

In the Sparkling – Unoaked category, Godelia Cuvée, 2015, from Bodegas Godelia in Castile- León won a gold medal and Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad, from Grupo Freixenet in Penedès took home a bronze medal. In the Sparkling – Oaked category, Vilarnau Chardonnay – Pinot Noir from González Byass in DO Cava received a bronze medal. And in the Sparkling – Unoaked (rosé) category, Segura Viudas Reserva Heredad Rosé, from Grupo Freixenet in Penedès took home a silver medal.

It’s worth noting that although champagne tends to steal the spotlight when it comes to sparkling wine, Godelia Cuvée, made from Godello grapes, was a real standout in the competition. Said Tersina Shieh, a wine marketer and independent wine judge, about this wine, “It is fresh with complexity from the time on lees and a crisp acidity. It has a high price quality ratio and it’s a good example to show consumers that bubbles don’t need to break the bank,” according to thedrinksbusiness.com.
