For the first time ever, four Spanish wines received the coveted 99-point rating in the venerated Guía Peñín wine guide.

The online edition of the Guía Peñín de los Vinos de España 2019 is now available on the publication’s website, www.guiapenin.wine, and fans of this extremely prestigious guide to Spanish wines will be shocked and undoubtedly delighted to see that for the first time ever in the same guide, four Spanish wines have received the top ranking of 99 points.

These very different wines were the following: Recaredo Segona Plenitud 1996 Brut Nature Cava from Recaredo winery; white wine Castillo Ygay 1986, from DOCa Rioja made by Marqués de Murrieta; red wine 1902 Centenary Carignan 2014 from DOCa Priorat made by Celler Mas Doix; and dessert wine Recóndita Armonía 1978 from the Alicante winery Bodegas Gutiérrez de la Vega.

In terms of regions, DO Jerez – Manzanilla de Sanúcar de Barrameda leads the way in terms of average points, followed by DOCa Priorat, DO Montilla-Moriles, DO Ribera Sacra, DO Ribera del Duero, DO Rías Baixas, DO Valdeorras, DO Calatayud and DO Toro, etc.

With an extremely rigorous tasting panel that has been tasting thousands of Spanish wines since January, other statistics about the much-anticipated, 2019 edition of this guide include 4,167 wines that received at least 90 points, and 231 wines from 129 wineries and 34 regions making it to the “Guía Peñín Podium” with top marks of between 95 and 99 points.
