Spanish wines, and specifically those from Galicia, were recently on everyone’s lips at two special events in the US. The DO Rías Baixas organized two seminars, in Boston and New York, during the first week of March.
A total of 22 brands were in the spotlight, and attendees were members of SevenFifty, a platform for professionals in the alcoholic beverage segment.
The first was hosted at Boston’s Island Creek Oyster Bar and was led by Michael Meager, a master sommelier. Attendees, of which there were around 50, were able to sample 9 different wines.
The second event was hosted at the wine bar CorkBuzz Wine Studio in New York. This tasting was led by sommelier Yannick Benjamin, and the 40 people in attendance sampled wines from three main producers from Rías Baixas. Attendees included professionals who recently participated in a reverse trade mission to the Galician DO.
The US is a very strategic market for this Designation of Origin as it’s the primary destination for its wine exports. Of the more than 6 million liters exported in 2016/2017, more than 2 million went to the US.
