Lufthansa travelers are enjoying a real treat. The airline added a spectacular Spanish wine to its in-flight menu: Petit Hipperia 2014, from Bodegas Pago de Vallegarcía in VT Castilla, and its being served to business and first class passengers in November and December.

The airline is extremely picky when it comes to its wine list, and candidates are subjected to a rigorous review prior to inclusion as Lufthansa aims to include only the best wines in the world. The lengthy process involves an initial selection of wines, following by up to a dozen tastings by internal and external experts to evaluate those selected. In the end, this wine from Adolfo Hornos and Eric Boissenot made the grade—no easy task.

Petit Hipperia 2014 is made from several different grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The result is a wine with a deep cherry color with intense balsamic and red berry aromas. The winery describes it as “an annual project where our different red varieties are combined in a unique way.” It pairs very well with rice, roasted red meat, lamb, stews, Ibérico ham, risotto and vegetables.

Vallegarcía, is located in the Montes de Toledo, aims to make excellent wines with grapes harvested by hand. The winemakers strive to “create wines which respect the individuality of the grape varieties and the expression of the terroir in each of our wines”.
